Un domaine d'exception, de luxe, pour vos mariages, réception et séminaire, en France, au coeur du Pays Basque

THE HISTORY OF THE CHÂTEAU 1680-2019
A FAMILY HISTORY

The Château de Larraldia was built in the 17th century by the knight Garat, who married his daughter to Adam de Larralde. The Estate then took the name of Larraldea.

In 1813, he saw clash, on his land, the Napoleonic army and that of the Duke of Wellington

The Estate was acquired in 1822 by Louis Miguel d'Arcangues and thus entered the family of the current owners, Bertrand Barthelemy and his wife Sylvie de Berne-Lagarde who, through her father, is a descendant of Louis Miguel d'Arcangues.

The Estate was sold by the family in 1926 and then opened a parenthesis of a century.

After the war, it was transformed by Maurice Carrère into a luxury hotel  where, taking advantage of its absolute calm and the protection of the gardens, celebrities such as the Duke of Windsor, Johnny Hallyday or Romy Schneider, stayed there out of sight. It was then sold to the Royal Monceau Group which let it collapse

Larraldia is then unfortunately  abandoned for years.

The parenthesis ends in 2019 when, during a walk, Sylvie and Bertrand rediscover this castle, abandoned and hidden by lush vegetation.

They are touched by its condition and have the ambition to bring it back to life and its former glory.

THE RENOVATION OF THE CASTLE 2020-2023

If the restoration of the castle is a family project, the objective is also to revive it as an element of Basque heritage and the local economy.

A RESTORATION RESPECTING THE TECHNIQUES OF THE PERIOD AND LOCAL IDENTITY

The choice was made to renovate according to the techniques and taste of the 18th century by calling on local craftsmen, thus taking advantage of their know-how and the love they have for their ancestral heritage.

THE SUCCESS OF A TEAM OF PASSIONATES

Each of the family, craftsmen and experts, has put their soul into it.
From the start, the Mayor and his teams have supported the project and provided advice.

The greatest success and the best reward have been this team spirit at the service of a project that has become collective.

A DOMAIN OPEN TO THE FUTURE

AN ECOLOGICAL PROJECT

The creation of remarkable gardens was at the heart of the project. The 17-hectare park with its majestic trees, typical of the Basque Country, which are oaks, beeches and magnolias, includes at its heart four pleasure gardens in four different styles: French, English, Japanese and Italian.

The system for recovering and recycling all the water on the property makes it possible to use rainwater, drainage, runoff, as well as wastewater for the maintenance of the gardens.

It is an innovative and pioneering process in the region, which saves water and provides the gardens with the watering necessary for them to flourish, without using local resources.

AN OPEN PROJECT TO PROMOTE REGIONAL CULTURE

Wishing that everyone can enjoy it, Larraldia is open for cultural or educational activities.

The places host concerts, classical music or traditional songs.

They also serve as a setting for exhibiting works of art, made locally or inspired by Basque heritage.

Particular attention is paid to young artists as well as more generally to young people in apprenticeship.

The beauty of the site, the splendor of the ever-changing lights are sources of inspiration for them.
